- High-pass with intent, not habit. A bass guitar high-passed at 40–50 Hz clears room for the log drum without thinning it. Rolling everything off at 100 Hz because a YouTube video said so kills the warmth these records need.
- Duck, don't gate. A short sidechain from the kick into the log drum — a few dB, fast attack, release timed to the tempo — keeps the transient legible. Deep pumping is an amapiano stylistic choice, not a default. If the artist didn't ask for it, don't sneak it in.
- Mono the very bottom. Below roughly 100 Hz, keep it centred. Wide sub translates badly on club systems and gets mangled by streaming codecs.
- Check phase between kick and log drum. Flipping polarity on one of them can hand you 2 dB of free weight, or cost you the same amount. It takes ten seconds to test.

The groove in afrobeats is carried by small, quiet elements — shaker, rim, clave, conga, tambourine, sometimes a talking drum. They usually occupy 2–8 kHz, exactly where consonants and hi-hats also live. Crowd that band and the record turns brittle.
A workable order of operations:
- Balance percussion as a group first, before vocals, with the kick and bass already sitting. If the groove doesn't already move you at this stage, the mix has a structural problem, not a plugin problem.
- Carve, don't boost. Pull a narrow dip around 3–4 kHz on the shaker so the vocal's presence has a lane, rather than boosting the vocal to compete.
- Use pan width for separation. Shaker slightly left, tambourine slightly right, congas spread, rim near centre. Panning solves masking that EQ can only half-solve.
- Watch the release times. Fast, aggressive bus compression on percussion eats the decay tails that make hand percussion sound human. Slower release, less ratio, more make-up.
- Keep one percussion element completely dry. Reverb on everything blurs the pocket. One dry anchor holds it.

- Automate before you compress harder. Clip gain on individual words costs nothing and preserves character. This is unglamorous and it is the single highest-leverage vocal move.
- Low-mid cleanup around 200–400 Hz. Dense afrobeats beds pile up here. A gentle wide cut on the vocal, or a dynamic dip on the instrumental triggered by the lead, buys clarity with no brightness added.
- Delay over reverb for placement. A tempo-synced eighth or dotted-eighth throw, filtered and ridden into gaps, keeps the vocal forward while still sounding spacious. Long reverb tails smear a fast groove.
- Keep ad-libs quiet and wide. They're texture. When they compete with the lead, both lose.
The goal is a vocal that feels embedded — moving with the percussion rather than floating over it.
Translation: assume a phone speaker
Most listeners will hear the record on a phone, wireless earbuds, or a car — not a monitored room. Phone speakers reproduce almost nothing below about 300–400 Hz, so the perceived weight comes from harmonics, not the fundamental.
Practical checks before any mix goes out:
- Play the full mix in mono at conversation volume. If the groove disappears, the mix is relying on width it doesn't have.
- Add light saturation to the sub source so its harmonics carry the note on small speakers. The bass line should still be identifiable in pitch on a laptop.
- Reference against two or three current afrobeats releases at matched loudness — not at their mastered level against your unmastered mix.
- Listen back at a genuinely low level. Balance problems hide at loud volumes.
- Check that the vocal is still intelligible with the phone in your pocket. That is a real listening condition.
