You've got a mix that sounds fine but flat. Everything's stacked in the center like a traffic jam, you've heard you're supposed to "use the stereo field," so you start flinging tracks left and right hoping something clicks. Then it sounds worse — lopsided — and you push it all back to zero.
The short answer: Keep your anchors (kick, snare, bass, lead vocal) dead center, then build outward by ear, hard-panning doubles and rhythm parts and spreading supporting elements at moderate widths. There's no formula, only a few reliable starting points and a lot of listening.
Start with the anchors in the center
Four things almost always live up the middle: kick, snare, bass, and lead vocal. These are the heaviest, most important elements in nearly every song, and the center is the loudest, most stable point in the stereo field because both speakers reproduce it at full level.
There's a practical reason to keep the low end centered, too. Bass frequencies carry the most energy in any mix. Split them off-center and you waste headroom on one side while the other feels thin. Keep anything below roughly 120 Hz centered and you stay out of trouble.
Everything else is negotiable. Once your anchors are locked, panning is just a question of where the rest of the arrangement wants to sit around them.
Build outward by ear, not by numbers
Think of panning positions on a scale from hard left (L100) to hard right (R100), center at zero. A useful starting grid:
- Center: kick, snare, bass, lead vocal, the main hook
- Moderate (30–40%): toms, supporting synths, secondary vocals, hi-hats, overheads
- Wide (60–80%): percussion, shakers, tambourines, ear candy
- Hard (100%): doubled rhythm guitars, double-tracked parts, stereo pads
That's a grid, not a law. The real move is to solo a part, place it where it feels right relative to the rest, then unsolo and check whether it crowds anything. If two midrange parts are fighting in the same zone, slide one of them across.
The doubling technique that actually creates width
Here's what separates a wide mix from a wishful one: record the part twice and pan the two takes hard left and hard right. Two genuine separate performances — not a copy-paste, not a plugin.
The small timing and pitch differences between the two takes are exactly what your ears read as width. This is how rock rhythm guitars get that wall-to-wall feel, and it works just as well on backing vocals, layered synths, and acoustic guitar. A single track with a stereo widener is a cheat that sounds fine in headphones and falls apart on a decent speaker.
Myth: Hard-panning everything makes a mix sound wide and professional. Overdone panning gives you a hollow, lopsided image with a hole in the middle, and it collapses the moment someone plays it on a phone speaker or a club's mono PA. Width is built deliberately with doubles and supporting elements, then checked in mono. A genuinely wide mix still has a strong, full center.
Mono compatibility is the test most beginners skip. Sum your mix to mono and listen: if parts vanish or the whole thing thins out, your width was an illusion built on phase relationships rather than real, separately-panned sources. Phase-based "width" from widener plugins tends to cause partial cancellation in mono — you lose level and sometimes timber entirely.
Where people disagree
Panning is partly taste and heavily genre, so the rules shift depending on what you're making.
The center-heavy camp. A lot of modern pop, hip-hop, and trap mixes stay deliberately narrow. The 808, kick, snare, and vocal dominate the center, with only ad-libs, hats, and a few ear-candy elements pushed out. It hits hard, translates everywhere, and survives mono without issue. When the arrangement is sparse, spreading thin just makes it feel empty.
The wide, spread camp. Dense rock, metal, orchestral, and plenty of indie productions pan aggressively because they have to. When you've got two rhythm guitars, layered keys, and a busy drum kit, spreading them across the field is the only way to keep every part audible. Width there isn't decoration — it's how you fit everything in without the mix turning to mush.
Neither approach is correct. Count your tracks first. Five elements want to stay near center; twenty-five elements need room, and panning is how you give it to them.

Small habits that keep mixes in order
Beyond the big picture, a few disciplines save mixes consistently:
- Pick a drum perspective and commit to it. Pan overheads from the drummer's point of view or the listener's — either works — but be consistent so the kit reads as one coherent image.
- Balance your weight. Push a bright rhythm guitar hard left, put something of similar density on the right. The overall image should feel even even when individual parts are off-center.
- Match pan and reverb throw. A guitar sitting at 3 o'clock often sounds great with its delay return panned toward 9 o'clock — it opens the field without pulling the balance.
- Keep the lead vocal locked at center. Even a few percent off reads as a mistake to most listeners.
- Automate when it makes sense. A guitar can sit wider in the chorus than in the verse. Panning isn't a set-and-forget value.

Stop thinking of panning as an effect you apply and start thinking of it as a seating chart. You're placing musicians so the audience can hear all of them clearly. Crowd everyone into one spot and it's mush. Space them deliberately and every part gets room to breathe.
The honest take: most amateur mixes have a width problem in the wrong direction. They're either bone-dry mono out of timidity, or chaotically spread out of panic. The fix for both is the same discipline — anchor the center, double what matters, spread the support, and check in mono before you call it done. Do that consistently across ten songs and the rules stop feeling like rules. They become the thing your hands reach for before your brain catches up.
