Your kick and your bass keep stepping on each other. Every time the kick lands, the low end turns to mud, and no amount of EQ seems to fix it. You've heard "sidechain it" thrown around like a magic word, but nobody explains what's actually happening.

The short answer: Sidechain compression puts a compressor on your bass that's triggered by the kick, so each kick hit briefly turns the bass down and the two stop fighting for the same instant of low end. Start with a fast attack (under 10 ms), a ~4:1 ratio, and a release tuned to the length of the kick, and you'll hear them lock together instead of clashing.

What sidechaining actually does

A normal compressor listens to the same signal it's compressing. A sidechained compressor listens to a different signal — the sidechain input — and reacts to that instead.

Drop a compressor on the bass, but feed the kick into its detector circuit. The bass passes through untouched until the kick hits. The moment that transient triggers the detector, the compressor clamps down on the bass for a split second, then releases.

The result is a tiny rhythmic dip in the bass that lines up exactly with every kick. Two sounds that used to occupy the same 40–80 Hz window at the same moment now take turns. That's the whole trick: it's a timing fix for a frequency problem.

The starting settings that actually work

Don't overthink the first pass. Get these in the ballpark and tune by ear:

  • Attack: as fast as the plugin allows, usually under 10 ms. You want the duck to happen on the kick transient, not after it.
  • Ratio: start at 4:1. Go higher (8:1 or more) for an aggressive EDM pump, lower (2:1) for subtle glue.
  • Threshold: set it low enough that the kick triggers 3–6 dB of gain reduction. Watch the gain-reduction meter, not just your ears, at first.
  • Release: the one that matters most. Too short and you get a click on recovery; too long and the bass never returns before the next kick. Tune it so the bass has fully recovered just as the next one arrives.
  • Knee: soft knee sounds smoother; hard knee sounds tighter and more deliberate.

For house and techno at 120–128 BPM, a release around 100–200 ms usually feels right. In dance music, tempo-sync the release to an eighth or quarter note and you get that classic breathing pump — at that point it's a feature, not a fix.

The mistake almost everyone makes first

Here's the misconception that wastes more mixes than any bad setting:

More pump is not better, and you don't always need it. Crank the gain reduction to 10+ dB and you don't get power — you get a mix that lurches and gasps and loses its groove. A subtle 2–3 dB duck you can barely consciously register almost always sounds more powerful than an obvious one, because the listener feels the kick land without noticing the trick. Sidechain compression is a clarity tool first and a special effect second.

If you can hear the bass "swelling" back on a casual listen, you've gone too far. Pull it back until it disappears, then nudge it up only if the track genuinely needs the movement.

The other camps

Triggering a compressor off the kick is the classic method, but it's not the only legitimate one. Good engineers reach for different tools depending on the job.

Volume shapers and duckers. Plugins like LFOTool, Kickstart, or your DAW's built-in volume automation let you draw the ducking envelope by hand. Instead of a compressor reacting to a transient, you get a precise, repeatable curve synced to the grid. This is the go-to for a lot of modern electronic producers because it's predictable and requires no trigger signal — it ducks on the beat whether the kick is quiet, layered, or absent entirely. The tradeoff: a busy or syncopated kick pattern can drift out of sync with a fixed drawn shape.

Frequency-conscious and multiband sidechaining. Instead of ducking the whole bass, you duck only the band that clashes — say, everything below 120 Hz — and leave the upper harmonics untouched. A multiband compressor or a dynamic EQ handles this cleanly. The bass keeps its character and presence in the mids while the sub gets out of the kick's way. This is the most transparent option and my default for anything where audible pumping would feel wrong.

No sidechain at all. Plenty of records — hip-hop, rock, jazz, a lot of pop — never touch a sidechain on the low end. They solve kick-versus-bass with static EQ and arrangement: carve a notch in the bass where the kick's fundamental sits, give the kick a clean window around 50–80 Hz, and make sure the two instruments aren't playing identical rhythms in the first place. When the kick and bass rarely land at the exact same moment, there's often nothing to fix.

How to choose between them

A quick decision tree from someone who's wired this up hundreds of times:

  1. Electronic / dance, want movement: classic compressor sidechain or a volume shaper. Embrace the pump as part of the sound.
  2. Want clarity without an audible effect: multiband or dynamic-EQ sidechain on the sub band only. Target roughly 60–80 Hz where the kick fundamental and bass sub typically collide.
  3. Acoustic, hip-hop, rock — pump would feel wrong: static EQ and arrangement first. Reach for sidechaining only if there's a real collision left after that.

These approaches aren't rivals. A gentle full-band duck for glue plus a dynamic EQ on the sub is a completely normal, professional setup — you're just applying two different amounts of the same idea.

A few things that trip people up

The kick needs to be a clean trigger. If your kick is soft or buried in reverb, the compressor won't fire crisply. Many engineers route a filtered copy — or even a separate "ghost" kick — to the sidechain input: something with a sharp, clear transient that triggers the ducking even when the audible kick is heavily processed.

Sidechaining isn't only for bass, either. Duck a busy pad against the lead vocal so the words always cut through. Duck a reverb return against the dry vocal so the tail blooms in the gaps instead of smearing the lyric. The mechanism — "turn this down whenever that plays" — solves clarity problems all over a mix.

And keep watching the gain-reduction meter while you dial it in. Your ears adapt fast and will underestimate how much ducking is happening. The meter won't lie.

The real skill here isn't dialing in a dramatic effect — it's making two sounds coexist so cleanly that nobody notices you did anything. Get the kick and bass to take turns, keep the duck just shy of audible, and the low end will feel bigger precisely because two things stopped fighting over the same space.
