You loaded the same EQ preset on all forty tracks, swept a high-pass up to 100 Hz on each one, and now your mix sounds smaller. Tighter, sure, but also thin, brittle, and somehow less alive than the rough you started with. That's not a coincidence.

The short answer: No, don't high-pass every track. Filter only the tracks that aren't contributing useful low end, set each cutoff by ear inside the full mix, and leave your kick, bass, and 808s alone. Blanket-filtering everything at 80 Hz doesn't clean the low end up so much as it carves the warmth out of your mix.

Why "high-pass everything" became a rule

The advice spread because it's easy to teach. Tell a beginner to slap a high-pass on every channel and they'll immediately remove some genuine mud and rumble. That small win is real — which is exactly why the rule stuck around long past its usefulness.

But a high-pass filter is subtractive surgery applied with a butter knife. The low end of a great mix isn't whatever survived after you filtered everything down. It's built deliberately, by a handful of tracks doing specific jobs, and supported by the body of everything else.

When you high-pass a piano at 100 Hz, you don't just remove rumble. You remove the weight of the low octaves — the part that makes it sound like a piano in a room rather than a sample on a laptop. Do that across twenty tracks and the cumulative loss is enormous.

What actually belongs to the low end

Think of your low end as a small committee, not a crowd. A typical arrangement has two or three tracks that own the bottom, and everyone else just needs to stay out of their way.

A practical division of labor:

  • Kick drum — owns roughly 40–100 Hz depending on genre. Do not high-pass it. If anything, roll off below 20–30 Hz to kill subsonic energy that wastes headroom without adding anything audible.
  • Bass / 808 — owns the sub and low mids, often 30–250 Hz. Leave the fundamental intact. Filtering a bass at 80 Hz is how you end up wondering where your sub went.
  • Vocals — usually safe to high-pass around 80–120 Hz. There's no useful musical information below the lowest note a singer hits, only plosives, mic stand rumble, and proximity boom.
  • Overheads, acoustic guitar, synths, pads — high-pass to taste, by ear, only as far as it takes to make room. Sometimes that's 60 Hz, sometimes it's 200 Hz, sometimes it's nothing at all.

The cutoff is a decision, not a default. Two tracks set the floor; everything else is filtered in relation to them, not according to a number you memorized.

The myth worth killing

Here's the belief that derails more mixes than almost any other EQ idea:

High-passing everything at 80–100 Hz "tightens" the low end. It doesn't. More often it makes the mix sound thin and gutless, because the low end was never the problem — overlap was. You build a tight bottom by giving the right tracks room, not by stripping low frequencies out of all of them.

A mix sounds muddy when five instruments are crowding 150–300 Hz simultaneously, not because a tambourine has some energy at 90 Hz. Fix the overlap between specific offenders, and your low end stays full while the mud clears.

How to set a high-pass that actually helps

Forget presets. Do this per track, in context, with the whole mix playing:

  1. Insert the high-pass and start with a moderate slope — 12 or 18 dB/octave, not 48.
  2. Solo nothing. Listen to the full mix.
  3. Sweep the cutoff up slowly until you hear the track get thinner or lose body, then back it off until the body returns.
  4. Bypass the filter and A/B. If the mix sounds better with the filter off, turn it off. That's a real answer, not a failure.
  5. Trust the loss-of-weight moment. The right cutoff is usually just below where the track starts sounding hollow.

A 12 dB/octave slope is gentler and more musical for most sources. Save steep 48 dB/octave brick-wall slopes for surgical rumble removal on a specific problem track. Steeper isn't cleaner — it introduces phase shift right in the frequency range your ear is most sensitive to.

Where people disagree

Plenty of working engineers land in different places, and most of them are right for their context.

The minimalists. This camp high-passes almost nothing, removing only true subsonic energy below roughly 20–30 Hz on most tracks, and only carving harder when an arrangement gets genuinely dense. Their logic: every filter costs a small phase smear and a small loss of energy, so don't pay that price unless a problem forces you to. On a sparse four-piece recording, this often produces the most natural-sounding low end.

The "move other faders first" school. Before touching a filter at all, these engineers reach for level and panning. Two guitars fighting in the low mids? Pan them apart and the conflict can vanish without any EQ. Often the cleanest fix for "muddy" is a 2 dB fader pull on the offender, not a high-pass on the victim.

The dense-arrangement camp. In a 60-track pop or hyperpop production, aggressive high-passing is genuinely necessary — there's simply no room for forty tracks to all carry low end. Filtering most things up to 100–200 Hz isn't a beginner mistake here; it's arithmetic. Context decides.

The common thread: none of them filter on autopilot. They filter when something is wrong and they can name what it is.

When blanket high-passing is the lesser evil

If you're mixing fast on a deadline, in a bad room, with a dense arrangement and no time to evaluate every track, a conservative high-pass across most channels around 40–60 Hz is a reasonable safety net. It prevents the worst rumble buildup with low risk of gutting anything important.

That's a triage move, not a craft choice. Don't confuse the deadline shortcut for the actual goal — and don't push that blanket cutoff up to 80–100 Hz "to be safe." That's where the safety net starts strangling the mix.

The mindset that fixes it

Stop thinking of high-passing as cleaning and start thinking of it as carving room for the tracks that own the bottom. Your kick and bass need a clear lane; everything else either supports them or gets out of the way — and only by exactly as much as the mix demands.

Before you reach for that filter on track thirty-seven, ask one question: what is this track contributing down low, and is it fighting anyone? If it's adding warmth and not stepping on the kick or bass, the most experienced move in the room is to leave it completely alone.
