You spent weeks on a mix. It sounded tight, punchy, balanced. Then you ran it through a limiter — or sent it off to get mastered — and it came back flatter, harsher, somehow smaller. The drums lost their snap. The whole thing fatigues your ears in thirty seconds.
The short answer: Almost every time, the mix went into mastering with too little headroom or was already crushed by a master-bus limiter. Mastering didn't add loudness — it added distortion. Leave your peaks around -6 to -3 dBFS true peak, pull any limiter off the master before you bounce, and never let it clip.
What's actually happening
Mastering isn't magic loudness. A loudness maximizer or brickwall limiter raises the quiet parts and clamps the loud peaks so the average level can rise. That clamping is the catch.
If your mix already peaks at -0.1 dBFS, there's nothing left to work with. The limiter must grab every transient hard and fast, and that kind of aggressive grab flattens your drum hits and causes pumping in time with the kick.
Now imagine you also had a limiter on your master bus while mixing, exported, then mastered again. You're squashing an already-squashed signal. The transients are gone before the mastering chain ever sees them — all the second stage can do is make the damage louder.
That's the core mechanism: dynamics removed early cannot be restored later. Once you've spent your dynamic range, you can't buy it back.
Where the headroom numbers come from
"Leave headroom" is useless advice without a target. Here's what to actually aim for:
- Bounce so the loudest peaks land around -6 to -3 dBFS (true peak, not sample peak — they differ when inter-sample peaks are present).
- Your mix bus should sit around -18 to -14 LUFS integrated before mastering. That gives a mastering engineer 4–8 dB of room to push, depending on how loud the genre wants to be.
- Leave at least -1 dBTP of true-peak margin so inter-sample peaks don't clip after D/A conversion or streaming codec encoding (AAC and MP3 can raise true-peak levels above 0 dBFS even from a clean source).
This isn't superstition. Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal all normalize playback to roughly -14 LUFS integrated. Slamming your master to -6 LUFS doesn't make it louder on those platforms — it just makes it more distorted at the same playback level.
The myth that ruins mixes
The single most expensive belief in home production is that the next stage will save the last one.
Mastering will not fix a bad mix or make it bigger. It can polish a good mix, but it cannot restore dynamics that were already compressed away. If the snare got buried under a slammed mix bus, no mastering chain on earth digs it back out.
Treat mastering as the final 5%, not a rescue mission. If the kick and bass are fighting, fix it in the mix. If the vocal is harsh at 3–4 kHz, fix it in the mix. Hand over a balanced, breathing file and mastering has something to enhance. Hand over a crushed one and it has something to wrestle.
Clean handoff checklist
Before you export for mastering — or before you start your own mastering session — run through this:
- Remove the limiter from your master bus. Yes, even the one you "use for reference." Especially that one.
- Check your peaks. The loudest moment should hit -6 to -3 dBFS true peak. If it's hotter, lower the master fader — don't reach for another compressor.
- Pull any master-bus clipper or maximizer. Gentle bus compression (1–3 dB of gain reduction, slow attack, slow release) can stay if it's part of your sound. Brickwall processing goes.
- Export at full resolution — 24-bit WAV, project sample rate, no dither applied at this stage, normalization off.
- Keep your fades and automation in, but don't print loudness you'll want to undo.

If you do all five and the mix still falls apart when pushed loud, the problem was never mastering. It's the balance underneath.
The other camps
Not all engineers agree on every detail, and some of these positions are legitimate:
Self-master, but back way off. Plenty of independent artists master their own tracks successfully. The rule that keeps it viable: if it falls apart when loud, fix the mix and ease off the limiter — don't add a second one. One gentle limiting stage, 2–3 dB of gain reduction, done.
Master quieter on purpose. Some producers chase clarity over competitive loudness and intentionally land around -12 to -10 LUFS. Since streaming normalizes anyway, they trade a fraction of perceived density for transients that actually punch through. This is a defensible aesthetic choice.
Separate the monitoring limiter from the mastering limiter. A strong camp argues you should never finish on the same brickwall limiter you reach for while mixing. Mix with a transparent limiter for loudness reference, bounce clean, then master on a separate chain — a slower limiter, or a soft clipper feeding a limiter, tuned for the genre. The logic: the tool you use to hear loudness while mixing should not be the tool that commits it.
Clip before you limit. Especially in loud genres, some engineers run a touch of soft clipping on transients before the limiter, so the limiter has an easier job and less inter-modulation to deal with. Done carefully, this preserves perceived punch. Done carelessly, it's distortion with extra steps. The dividing line is whether you can hear it at unity gain.
What none of these camps believe: that mastering fixes a crushed mix. That position has no defenders.
How to diagnose your own situation
Bounce two versions. One with your full master chain. One with the master-bus processing bypassed and the output fader pulled down so the loudest peak sits around -4 dBFS.
Loudness-match them by ear — reduce the loud version until both feel the same volume — then A/B. If the bypassed version sounds clearer, more open, and less fatiguing, your mastering stage is hurting you. The culprit is almost always headroom or over-limiting.
That match-and-compare test is the whole diagnostic. Loudness fools your ear into hearing "better," so you must neutralize the volume difference before you can judge anything honestly.
The mix is the foundation; the master is the polish. You cannot polish your way out of a foundation problem. Give the final stage room to work and it will reward you. Starve it of headroom and it will just make your mistakes louder.
